Flexible ductwork refers to bendable ventilation piping used in dryer vent systems and HVAC applications. This type of duct consists of a wire coil frame covered with layers of plastic, foil, or fabric material that allows it to bend and curve around obstacles while maintaining an open airflow path.
Construction and Materials
Most flexible dryer vent ducts feature a spring-wire helix core wrapped in aluminum foil or plastic laminate. The corrugated, accordion-like design allows the duct to compress, extend, and bend to navigate tight spaces and awkward angles. Commercial-grade versions may include additional layers of insulation or fire-resistant materials for enhanced safety.

Building codes in many jurisdictions limit the length of flexible ductwork permitted in dryer vent systems, typically restricting it to short transition sections of 8 feet or less. Extended runs of flexible duct can sag when not properly supported, creating low spots where lint and moisture collect.
Maintenance Requirements
Flexible ductwork demands regular inspection and cleaning. The material can deteriorate over time from heat exposure, developing holes or separating at connection points.
