Static pressure testing is a diagnostic measurement technique used by HVAC professionals to evaluate how efficiently air moves through your ductwork system. This test measures the resistance air encounters as it travels from your heating or cooling equipment through the ducts and into your living spaces. By comparing pressure readings at different points in the system, technicians can identify problems that restrict airflow and reduce comfort.

How Static Pressure Testing Works

During a static pressure test, an HVAC technician uses a manometer or digital pressure gauge to measure air pressure at multiple locations. The technician typically takes readings at the supply plenum (where air leaves the furnace or air handler) and the return plenum (where air comes back to the unit). The difference between these measurements reveals how much resistance exists in your duct system.

Normal residential systems should operate within a specific pressure range, typically between 0.5 and 0.82 inches of water column (IWC) of total external static pressure. Readings above this range indicate excessive resistance that forces your HVAC equipment to work harder than designed.
